The benefits of film and film wrapping

Across the UK and Europe farmers are turning to film and film wrapping to replace twine and netwrap. The Newsletter team went to find out why?

For many years round bales were formed with either twine or netwrap and then preserved by covering with balewrap. Many balers are capable of applying film instead and the practice is becoming more and more popular as both the baler film and balewrap are made from the same base material.

But that’s not the only advantage. Baler film produces smaller, denser bales meaning less oxygen can get in. It also offers better protection with extra layers of film and with the wider 1380mm versions, an 11cm overlap around the edge of the bale.

With 66% of the bale surface being around the barrel, the majority of the bale is protected. Mould can’t grow around this area, as no oxygen can penetrate. This extra protection also means the bale ferments quickly, producing better quality silage.

With less mould there is less fodder waste at feeding and no fodder becomes enmeshed thanks to its smooth surface. Opening is easier too, either mechanically or manually. Mechanically the bale can be cut cleanly and the baler film and balewrap comes away smoothly. You don’t even have to leave the tractor, as the two films can be removed and recycled together, saving time.

Manual opening is easy, with your knife able to cut through the plastic seamlessly and the film allows the bale to keep its shape better thanks to its higher holding force.

Better Together

For the best combination, we recommend Baletite in conjunction with SilotitePro1800 balewrap. SilotitePro1800 is perfect for both round and square bales and can be used on any type of crop and bale wrapping machinery. With its 1800m length, contractors get up to 20% more bales per reel, meaning less downtime to change reels.

Our new SilotitePro1800 is a technically advanced stretchfilm with an enhanced oxygen barrier and UV protection for bales, whatever the weather. The innovative sleeve packaging also offers significant advantages.

It’s lighter than the standard cardboard box and there is a reduction of almost 45kg in packaging material used on every pallet. Cardboard also takes up a lot of space on the pallet. By using sleeve packaging we can add an extra 300m of film on each reel.

Along with time savings, Silotite1800 means there is 20% less handling, transportation and storage space required. Its unique sleeve packaging also means there are no bulky boxes to handle and recycling is easy. The packaging is made from the same film as the bale wrap so no separating of materials is needed. And the reel is more protected when it is stored on the baler.
The water-resistant cardboard core safeguards against humidity and is also recyclable.
