Suttons Seeds Houseplant Seeds - Barista
Yes, you can grow your very own homegrown coffee
Grow your own coffee plant from seed! This Barista plant has luscious green leaves, which look amazing and will add a tropical touch to a shady spot in your home.
Its attractive clusters of sweetly scented white flowers will fill your home with a beautiful fragrance. These are followed by glorious red berries, which are in fact coffee beans!
Soak the seed for at least 24 hours prior to sowing. You should see a small white bulge emerge from the seeds in this time - some may not produce this, but the ones that do are ready to sow. Fill a pot (approximately 13cm deep) with vermiculite, watering to ensure it is moist before sowing seed. Place one coffee bean, flat side down, in the centre of each pot approx 2.5cm (1") deep and gently cover with vermiculite. Cover each pot with clear plastic to keep moisture in. Keep moist throughout the germination period, misting daily is a good way to keep a good moisture level. Ensure to put the plastic back over the pot after each misting. Keep temperature at 24-27ºC (75-80ºF). Pot on into a bigger pot when the roots begin to come through the base of and fill up the pot inside comfortably. Note: Coffee plants can take up to 9 months before it really begins to establish, they are slow-growing but well worth the wait.
