Join our Faecal Worm Egg Counting Course for Sheep

Molecare Farm Vets will be running Faecal Worm Egg Counting courses for sheep farmers on the following dates:

 

  • Tuesday 13th April, 1pm – 4pm at Molecare Farm Vets, Nutwell Estate, Lympstone, Exmouth, Devon, EX8 5AN
  • Wednesday 26th April, 1pm – 4pm at Mole Valley Farmers, Underlane, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 6EE
  • Wednesday 24th May, 1pm – 4pm at Molecare Farm Vets, Nutwell Estate, Lympstone, Exmouth, Devon, EX8 5AN

This course will cover the following:

  • Purpose of worm egg counting
  • Worm species and significance
  • Microscope procedure: 
    • Taking samples
    • Prepping samples
    • Using the equipment
    • Recognising and counting worm eggs
  • Interpretations of findings in accordance with vet support
  • Questions

The course will discuss the step-by-step process of the correct procedures starting with taking samples from the right animals and storing them properly to recognising and counting eggs using your microscope. The McMaster method enables a known volume of faecal suspension to be examined using a slide with a counting chamber and a microscope. At the end of the course participants will have the knowledge to be able to count the eggs in the faeces. With the careful interpretation of the results, you will be able to discuss with your vet whether treatment is appropriate.

Course attendees having their own equipment is a real advantage in this course. FEC equipment cost from £250 - £650 depending on quality of microscope.

  • Scales – accurate to 0.1g
  • 2 beakers/plastic cups
  • Sieve/tea strainer
  • Measuring cylinder/50ml syringe
  • Plastic pipettes
  • Wooden spatulas for stirring
  • Plastic bottle to make saturated salt solution + salt
  • Microscope (many sources and costs, just needs to have 400x magnification and underneath LED illumination and to be able to move the stage with a roller)
  • McMaster counting slide
